The City of Springboro Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC) in partnership with the Franklin-Springboro Public Library are presenting a Speaker Series focusing on hiking and bicycling adventures. All programs are free and presented at 6:30 p.m. in the City of Springboro Community Room, 320 W. Central Avenue. Seating is first-come, first-served.
- Wednesday, January 5: Walking on Sunshine: A Thru-Hike of the 1,100-mile Florida Trail: Take a 1,100-mile journey from the Everglades to Pensacola. The Florida Trail ranges from remote and wild swamps to bike paths through busy suburban Orlando to the white, sandy beaches of the Panhandle. Learn how Andy “Captain Blue” Niekamp endured sun, heat, rain, wind, hurricane damage and venomous snakes to complete this two-and-a-half-month hike.
- Tuesday, January 18: Team Enso: The Journey To and the Race Across America: The Race Across America (RAAM) is an ultra-distance road cycling race that dates to 1982, beginning in Oceanside, California, and ending in Annapolis, Maryland. Team Enso is a Dayton-based four-person team that completed the RAAM 2021, winning their category. This session will include team and crew members and cover how Team Enso originated, how they selected RAAM and the importance of the charities supported by the team, preparation, the race, finish and results, and what’s next for Team Enso.
- Monday, January 31: The Pilgrimage in Spain: Camino de Santiago: This pilgrimage route through northern Spain to Santiago de Compostela is over 1,000 years old. Although it has many starting points throughout Europe, the oldest and most popular track is the Napoleonic or French route, which traditionally begins on the French side of the Pyrenees in Saint Jean Pied de Port. Join Dr. Jocelyn Hardman as she discusses the rich history of this pilgrimage and the multitude of cultural artifacts it has inspired, as well as how to train, plan and pack for it. Dr. Hardman is a Lecturer in Spanish and has hiked extensively in Europe, South America and the United States.
- Wednesday, February 16: “Basic Bicycle Maintenance: How to Keep your Bike Running Smoothly at Home. This hands-on session will cover basic bicycle repair as we transition from winter to spring riding season. Learn how to properly clean and lube your drivetrain, how to fix a flat tire (feel free to bring your tire!), basic adjustments and safety checks. The session is not designed to diagnose and repair specific issues, but a learning opportunity for routine maintenance and repair on bicycles. Otto Bohn owns and operates Spoken Bicycles in Downtown Middletown, which sells and repairs bicycles, accessories and also conducts spinning and road riding classes and rides.
